Definitely the finest and the most impressive Chateau de la Loire.
The main purpose of going to Chambord is to be impressed by the size of it.
Just a few figures to give you an idea:
- A domain as big as Paris
- 440 rooms
- 365 fireplaces
- 84 staircases
- Stables for 1200 horses
- A 32 km enclosing wall
Needless to say that the buiding cost was huge and nearly made the French bankrupt.
The result is a totally impractical building that has been empty most of its life and even left to decay a few times.
As a visitor, you will be truly amazed by the architecture. You are well advised to book an audio-guide to make the best out of your visit.
However, be prepared not to see a homely place !
Good to know
This is quite interesting to remember that the king Francois I, who ordered this gigantic masterpiece, never lived in it: he only made a few short hunting visits.
